I sure am proud of those tiny little basil sprouts! Everyday they keep getting bigger and bigger, which for some reason surprises me. Sasha is equally just as obsessed. He even made sure to pray for our “plants” at dinner time. Whether or not they will live to become real substantial food is another question. This is our first year in our own home, and therefore our first year attempting to grow our own garden. Tips and tricks are much appreciated.
We always had a big garden growing up. BIG. I can still remember how it looked and what we grew. Strawberries, grapes, tomatoes, peas, green beans, pumpkin, squash, zucchini, asparagus, corn, and more. My parents are some of the hardest working people I know and even after long work weeks, they spent their Saturdays weeding and caring for the yard (and still do!).
I suppose that could be why I want a garden, although I’m MUCH lazier, believe me. The real reasons are 1) saving money on food, 2) the joy of actually growing something, and 3) the taste. Whatever is in the stores here seems to be picked way too soon. I can’t tell you how much it bums me out to eat fruit that isn’t juicy and sweet. Same thing with vegetables that are just bitter or bland. If I want good quality produce then I have to pay an arm and a leg for it, which I need to take care of my kids.
Wish us luck! I’m excited to grow our little garden and will post an update with some results!
